Forest Green Rovers Under 18s ran out comfortable 4-1 winners at home to Newport County on Saturday.

Goals from Isaiah Jones, a Dan Ogunleye brace and a strike from Destiny Oladipo were the difference, despite a late Exiles goal with 15 minutes to play.

Despite scoring four for the second week running, head of Academy Hannah Dingley insisted there is still more to come from her squad.

“In all honesty, I was disappointed with the performance, I know 4-1 sounds convincing and I think it was on the balance of the game, I don’t think the boys played to a standard that I know they are capable of doing,” she said.

“I think I’ve spoken about it before, but we’re spreading the goals around. Dan Ogunleye scored his first goals of the season and Destiny Oladipo got a goal which is really positive.

“Newport had a game plan to sit in and try to spoil play and score on the counter attack, which worked for the first 20 minutes and it frustrated us and we couldn’t find a rhythm.

“The first goal from Issy was from a set play, so it wasn’t a pretty goal, but once we scored the game started to open up and we had more opportunities.”

Rovers were without Ollie Artwell, the winger having gone on a work experience loan to local side Cirencester Town, where he marked his debut with a goal and an assist.

“I watched Ollie play on Tuesday and on Saturday where he set another up with a cross,” she explained.

“It’s really pleasing to see the boys go out at that level, and not only see them competing, but excelling. It also gets them used to playing regularly with games on Saturdays and Tuesdays.

“Ollie’s taken to it like a duck to water. He was a bit nervous ahead of the first game, but as soon as he had some success he’s grown in confidence and is relishing in the opportunity.

“It’s important that the boys get to experience what it’s like to get beaten around a little bit. When you’re playing League One and Two football, that’s what they’d come up against.”

The academy are at home again on Saturday as they face Bristol Rovers for an 11.00am kick off.
