Forest Green Rovers Under 18s secured a convincing 4-0 victory over Cambridge United in Merit League Two on Friday at the Royal Agricultural University.

Two goals from midfielder Sam Hendy, coupled with a goal each for Dan Jones and Vaughn Covil, ensured FGR came away with what was a dominant performance from the home side.

In what was a sunny day in Cirencester, Forest Green looked to control the game from the start and despite having an array of chances throughout the first half, particularly through Jay Malshanskyj and top scorer Dan Ogunleye, the score remained goalless at the break.

Rovers would finally break the deadlock in the 54th minute through Hendy with a well-worked move between him and Jones which saw the youngster finish coolly one-on-one with the goalkeeper Louis Chadwick.

Hendy would soon score his second in the 78th minute with a very similar routine between him and Jones before smashing home from close range.

Forest Green were now in complete control of the game and their dominance was confirmed when Covil grabbed his first goal for the Under 18s with a tidy finish, after good link-up play between him and fellow substitute Elias Youssef.

With a brace of assists to his name, Jones would then find himself on the scoresheet in 87th minute with a well-taken, first-time finish.

The ball fell kindly to him on the edge of the area, after initial good work down the left-hand side from final substitute Destiny Oladipo.

The young midfielder would place the ball calmly into the right-hand corner of the goal, leaving Chadwick no chance.

The action was not quite over, as the frustration appeared to get the better of Cambridge as they would finish the game with 10 men.

The Under 18s now face Leyton Orient in two weeks’ time in their final league game of the season.
