Forest Green midfielder Adam May has opened up on a season to remember and banishing injury worries following a consistent campaign in a Rovers shirt.
Having signed for the club back in July, the 27-year-old is one of two players - also Jamie Robson - to have been involved in every league match - surpassing 4,000 minutes played in the process.
A regular name on the team sheet and incredibly popular member of the dressing room, May is delighted with a first season in Nailsworth.
"I’m grateful to the Gaffer (Steve Cotterill)," says May. "Our conversations when I first signed here were that he’d play me throughout the campaign – and I’m really grateful that he has."
“It was one of the main things that encouraged me to sign here alongside everything else he mentioned about the club.
"It was getting back in and enjoying playing again. It’s been a really good season and I’m really happy."
May came through the ranks at Portsmouth but spent much of his five years on loan at the likes of Sutton United, Aldershot Town and Swindon Town.
The commanding midfielder moved to the U’s in 2020 on a free transfer and played an influential role in a League Two promotion-winning season in 2020/2021.
He made 38 league appearances in League One the following season but suffered a long-term injury that hampered his progress in the 2022/23 campaign.
May returned to action in September 2023 but found his playing time limited at the Abbey Stadium.
“I had a six-month break when I first came back into playing, dipping in and out whilst I was at Cambridge but not quite playing every week – that built into it playing and was followed up by a good pre-season here."
May suffered a serious injury lay-off when he ruptured an interior cruciate ligament in a game against Bristol Rovers in October 2022.
Readying himself for a return to action took time, but the patience shown during this stage has allowed him to kick-on now here in GL6.
"I’ve tried to forget about it and concentrate on myself and not worry about that going into games.
"Thankfully I’ve been able to tick off a number of games here." added May.
Whilst endearing himself to the supporters with a number of consistent performances across this campaign, his stunning goal at home to Solihull Moors was another one to add to the showreel.
“That one wasn’t bad but there’s been plenty more too from the lads," he concedes with a smirk.
Rovers head to Hartlepool United on Bank Holiday Monday seeking a win to round off the regular National League season with a playoff campaign still to enjoy.
“It’s been a really good, tough season but one we’ve enjoyed," says May. “We wanted to get a few wins to take some momentum into the playoffs, too!"
