FGR sealed their place in the next round of the Papa John’s Trophy thanks to goals in both halves, securing a two-goal win against Walsall at the Banks’s Stadium.
Rob Edwards gave Harvey Bunker his first appearance since being recalled from Chippenham Town, one of eight changes to the team that lost to St Albans in the FA Cup last Sunday.
Matty Stevens' 11th goal in all competitions this season and a brilliant curling effort from Jake Young ensured Rovers finished Group L top of the pile.
Our number nine netted the opener for Rovers in the 15th minute when Jack Aitchison’s lay off found him on the edge of the box, where he calmly slotted the ball in the near corner.
Young capped a professional display when he picked up the ball on the edge of the box, sending a beautiful bending effort into the top right corner, leaving Rose no chance.
Walsall came close to an equaliser on the 75-minute mark, but substitute George Miller’s effort sailed over the bar from six yards out.
Stevens had a chance to double the lead 10 minutes after his opener when Taylor Allen made a driving run into the box before passing to the 23-year-old, but he curled his effort just over the bar.
FGR came close once again moments before the break after a well worked free kick worked its way to Stevens inside the box, but Jack Rose was equal to his effort.
The hosts created chances of their own with their best of the first period coming through Ash Taylor in the 2nd minute, but his header from a corner was well stopped by Luke McGee.
Chances were hard to come by for both sides in the second half, but Jake Young, a second half substitute, found space inside the box moments after coming on, but his effort was comfortably collected by Rose.
Aitchison found himself bearing down on goal after a loose ball, but he couldn’t quite turn from provider into scorer, with his curling shot being saved by Rose.
