Rovers came from behind away from home for the second game running as Matty Stevens’ second half goal secured a 1-1 draw against Salford City at the Peninsula Stadium.

Stevens netted his 21st league goal of the season to cancel out Matt Smith’s early header, to leave Rob Edwards’ side eight points clear at the summit of League Two.

The hosts took the lead within the first seven minutes of the match when January signing Smith met the Ammies captain Jason Lowe’s cross to head home.

Rovers equalised early in the second half after a fantastic ball over the top from Ebou Adams sent Kane Wilson down the right flank, and his low cross was turned in by Stevens.

The first half was one of few chances but the first of the game went to FGR, with Aitchison having a shot from range comfortably collected by Tom King.

Chances became more frequent in the second period, with Nicky Cadden coming close from a free kick on the 49-minute mark.

The Greater Manchester side also had chances to regain the lead, with their six-foot six striker nearly repeating his earlier finish, but his header from a Brandon Thomas-Asante went just over the bar.

Like Salford’s striker Smith, Stevens also came close to netting a brace when his effort on the 74-minute mark went just wide from a tight angle, after a quick FGR counterattack.

The visitors piled on the pressure late on with Josh March’s attempted looping cross nearly fooling Salford keeper King, who had to tip the ball over the bar.

Jamille Matt looked to be through on goal to win it for Rovers, but a brilliant last-ditch tackle by Jordan Turnbull kept the scores level.

Cadden also came close at the death after a sustained period of pressure the ball fell to the Scot, but his volley was unconvincingly stopped by King.

The chances came flooding in for Rovers in stoppage time, but they just couldn’t convert them with March forcing another spill from King which led to a corner that Adams headed over.
