Forest Green 1-0 Sheffield Wednesday
Will Pritchard26th March 2023

Forest Green Rovers claimed their first league win under Duncan Ferguson, as they beat promotion chasing Sheffield Wednesday 1-0 at the Bolt New Lawn.

Jordon Garrick’s fourth league goal of the season was enough to get his side over the line, with the 24-year-old’s 35th minute strike firing Rovers to a much needed three points.

Rovers’ manager Ferguson elected to make two changes to the starting line-up from the side at Plymouth, with Ross Doohan and Garrick replacing Lewis Thomas and Corey O’Keeffe from the off.

After an opening fifteen minutes which saw Rovers attack on the front foot, they would step up their advances as Charlie Savage forced a superb stop from Owls 'keeper Cameron Dawson.

Ferguson’s changes to the starting line-up would certainly be justified, as it was one of his selections who opened the scoring in Nailsworth after 35 minutes.

Dom Bernard lifted the ball into the path of Garrick, who found the net with a composed finish from close-range, firing the ball past Dawson on his favoured right-foot.

Rovers wouldn’t rest easy after the goal, and proceeded to continue their battle with Wednesday, limiting any chances which Darren Moore’s side were looking to create in the first half.

Paragraph Break

Moore would only make one change at the break, as he brought Jack Hunt on for Liam Palmer as his side attempted to get back into the match.

Having started the first half positively, Rovers adopted the same approach to the restart, looking to extend their lead over the Owls.

Myles Peart Harris would have the first chance of the second period, as he lifted the ball just wide of the Wednesday goal from distance in the 48th minute.

Yet again, it would be Peart-Harris, who then found Scotsman Kyle McAllister in acres of space on the right-hand side.

McAllister would drift into the box from the right to the left, firing into the bottom-right corner on his favoured foot, eventually forcing a brilliant save from Dawson to keep the deficit to a singular goal.

Rovers continued to be tested in the second half, as Sheffield Wednesday really started to impact the game - having most of the possession as they proceeded to put the hosts under immense pressure.

Wednesday came close to dragging themselves back level, as Doohan was forced to contend with Lee Gregory’s effort in the 67th minute – but help from defender Udoka Godwin-Malife ensured that the duo ultimately kept the ball out of the net.

Tension continued to ramp up at The Bolt New Lawn as the Owls kept pushing for an equaliser, but it just wouldn’t come to fruition.

Ferguson’s side would defend magnificently to earn a much-deserved victory at home, with the full-time whistle concluding an excellent performance from Rovers against tough opposition.
